RouteGuessr is a rock climber's take on the popular online "Guessr" game genre. Taking a great amount of inspiration from its predecessors, like GeoGuessr, the classic style of RouteGuessr is an interactive geography game. Analyze five images from different climbing areas across the United States to determine where their precise locations.
Inspiration for this project came from frequent questions from friends regarding the location of unlabeled routes posted online. Occasionally, my friends and I would gameify these questions, which eventually lead to the idea and creation of RouteGuessr! During the development cycle, ideas for new features naturally arose, and that led to the full website that we have today!
In addition, this project serves as a way to advance my technical skill set with web deployment. RouteGuessr's backend is developed in Python utilizing the Flask framework for , frontend developed utilizing HTML/CSS with JavaScript elements, and hosted on an AWS PostgreSQL server. This project has been an exceptional capstone to solidify my skills with these frameworks in addition to providing an enjoyable past-time/utility for the climbing community.
Whether you're a seasoned climber or a gumby, RouteGuessr offers a unique way to explore some of the world's most beautiful and challenging rock climbing locations, alongside serving an additional resource to learn more about the sport itself. My hope is that people across the community come together and enjoy this project in whatever way they prefer.
